Business Activities:

Since its foundation in 1949, FHG is associated to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the largest European governmental non-profit applied research organisation. Currently in Germany 56 Fraunhofer Institutes belong to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft at 40 different locations. The number of employees is 13,000 with an annual research budget of € 1.3 billion. The Fraunhofer WKI focuses on the development of novel processes, technologies, and materials from renewable resources such as wood and other natural cellulosic materials. They investigate, improve, and develop methods and technologies for wood- and natural-fibre based composite materials, study the effect of materials and products on indoor air quality, and develop measurement and quality control technologies and systems targeted to products based on renewable resources. Their applied research activities rely on close collaboration with industry, and their capabilities, which include pilot-plant scale processing of natural fibrous materials, large climatic chambers, and state of the art laboratories position us as a leading institution that can address complex problems. The WKI is a member of a number of national and international consortia and plays a leading role in the InnovaWood Initiative that serves the forest and wood processing industries. The WKI is skilled with competence in the areas of wood panel production from sustainable raw materials and they have been involved in several Research projects such as:

–       DIPP  (FP6-SME-2005):  Development  of  Innovative  Particleboard  Panels  for  a  better  mechanical performance and a lower environmental impact.

LIMOWOOD (FP7-SME-2012): Advanced wood plastic composite material for the production of bath furniture resistant to moisture and free of coatings.

Role in the project:

FHG will be the RTD performer in charge of the majority of the crucial research of the project (WP4 and WP5), applying their wide expertise on the areas of wood resins processability and their use in wood based panels production. Moreover they will be leading all tasks devoted to wood panel characterization and determination of panel emission levels according to EU standards, fields in which they are pioneers at EU level. FHG will support MILL during the key industrial production of wood panels at a prototype size (45×45 cm) in WP6. Member of the Project Board with a non-voting but consulting position for advice.
